Top Travel Trend of 2023: Sustainable travel
Sustainable travel is a buzzy phrase these days. But, what IS sustainable travel? Is it the cute, yet ineffective sign in the hotel bathroom asking me to reuse my towel? Is it eschewing plastic straws at the bar? Spoiler alert….no.
Sustainable travel = responsible travel. It’s about reducing negative impacts of tourism while maximizing the positive benefits for communities, ecosystems, and the planet. It preserves cultural heritage, protects the planet, and supports local economies. By the way, let’s not call it a trend, it’s a TRANSFORMATION.
As travelers become increasingly aware of the environmental impact of their travel, we’re searching for ways to do better. If we’re being honest though, sustainability or the environment isn’t top of mind or a priority in our decision making. Yet.
You have choices in all aspects of life: what products to buy (look for Certified B Corp + Leaping Bunny certified), and how you want to travel is one of those choices. Making TRAVEL decisions based on sustainability = a positive impact. And it doesn’t have to mean sacrificing quality, or reusing your towel all week (ew). Here are three simple ways you can start your sustainable travel journey. Comment below with any questions, or email me Jessica@laluxurytravel.com to book your next (sustainable) vacation.
3 Ways to Travel Sustainably
Choose eco-friendly accommodations: Choose hotels and resorts that prioritize sustainability. Look for certifications such as LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) or Green Key, as they adhere to strict environmental standards. Some hotels have solar panels or use sustainable materials for construction. Others go further, and design sustainably from the ground up. 1 Hotels is an industry leader in sustainability, and proves you don’t have to sacrifice luxury for sustainability.

Practice responsible wildlife tourism: When exploring nature and wildlife during your travels, prioritize ethical experiences. Avoid activities that exploit animals or disturb their natural habitats. Choose responsible tour operators (LA Luxury Travel can assist) that prioritize conservation and education. Respect local guidelines and regulations regarding wildlife interactions, and never participate in activities that involve captive or endangered animals. Stay at lodges that let you actively participate in conservation programs. Singita has been a leader in conservation tourism and sustainability in Africa for decades, and has 18 luxury lodges and camps throughout South Africa, Tanzania, Zimbabwe, and Rwanda.

Support local communities and economies: Sustainable travel helps boost local economies and protect traditional cultures. It’s as easy as taking your time in each destination and really experiencing the places you visit. This means avoiding rushed itineraries, and instead focusing on exploring the local culture and nature. Spending more time in a destination makes for more authentic, memorable, and meaningful travel experiences for you. Engage in responsible shopping by purchasing locally made products and souvenirs, and seek out tours or activities that aim to empower local residents and promote their heritage, traditions, and crafts. Book excursions led by local guides or learn a new skill from a local expert. If you book a packaged tour, choose an operator that prioritizes local suppliers.
