ETIAS: 9 things to know before 2024
I want to make sure you're up to date with the latest travel news. Let's dive into the top nine things you need to know about the upcoming European Travel Information and Authorisation System, also known as ETIAS. And calm down, it’s not a big deal.
ETIAS is NOT a Visa
Don't worry, ETIAS is not a visa! It's actually a visa waiver pre-screening program for travelers from over 60 countries, including the USA, UK, and New Zealand, who are currently eligible for visa-free travel to the Schengen Area. It's similar to the US ESTA program.
2. Official ETIAS Website
Beware of fake websites! The official ETIAS website can be found under the "europa.eu" domain. Don't fall for any other websites claiming to be the real deal or unnecessary intermediaries. Stay informed and stick to the official source.
3. Does Not Affect Schengen Visa Holders
If you currently require a Schengen visa for travel to the 27 Schengen Area countries, don't worry, ETIAS doesn't apply to you. However, if any country gains visa liberalization after ETIAS takes effect, travelers from that country will need to apply for ETIAS instead of a visa.
4. ETIAS is a Security Measure
ETIAS is not a "Brexit revenge," as some media outlets may have portrayed it. It's actually a security measure implemented by the EU to enhance border control and ensure the safety of its citizens and visitors. It aims to improve border management and facilitate the visa liberalization policy.
5. Similar Systems in Other Countries
Remember, the EU is not the only one with this kind of system. The US has the Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA), Australia has the Electronic Travel Authority (eTA), and even the UK is working on implementing a similar system called Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA). It's a global trend!
6. Quick and Easy Application
Applying for an ETIAS is a breeze compared to a visa. The application process is expected to take about ten minutes. Fill in some basic information, upload your passport scan and photo, and you're good to go.
7. Affordable Fee
Contrary to some sensational claims, obtaining an ETIAS won't break the bank. It costs only €7, making it one of the most affordable travel authorizations out there. Plus, you can use the same ETIAS for multiple trips within its validity period.
8. Long Validity Period
Good news! Your ETIAS will be valid for two years initially. If your passport expires within two years, your ETIAS will be valid until your passport expires. If your passport is valid for more than two years, your ETIAS will be valid for the full two years.
9. Linked to the Entry/Exit System
ETIAS is closely linked to the Entry/Exit System (EES), another EU security initiative. The EES will replace visa stamping and play a significant role in Schengen visa applications. It aims to enhance security and streamline visa processing procedures.
